There are some places in the world where flora is synonymous with a location - such as the redwood forests of northern California. But sometimes, by the work of man, nature's magnificence can find itself in distant yet familiar locations. Here in Rotorua, the California Redwoods have been thriving for over a century - and I’m here to find out how. And why. This story actually begins in the United States. It is the early 1900’s and the logging industry is felling countless California Redwoods for commercial use. And seeing a similar opportunity, this fast-growing, sturdy species was transplanted to this region with profitable aspirations. And while the US began protecting their trees to preserve their immense beauty, New Zealand’s story is a bit different. It turns out that due to the higher levels of rainfall, the trees grew faster thus having softer wood and leaving them commercially worthless. Over a century later, these preserved trees are thriving in what is now called the Redwood Memorial Grove. And we’re here at the Treewalk to spend an afternoon on elevated walkways exploring these splendid giants.
