The Mexican Second Division was created in the 1950-51 season with seven founding teams, using a long tournament format, where the champion was determined by points, until 1970, with the arrival of the playoff system in Mexican soccer. From there, it expanded to include between 18 and 20 clubs. Normally, the season's champion was the one that was promoted, but after the 1993-94 season, with the creation of the Primera División 'A', the Segunda División became the third tier in Mexico. The Primera División A, El Ascenso MX, and the expansion league took over as the second tier of Mexican soccer. In 1996, the season was divided into two short tournaments, with two champions emerging per year. The promotion spot was determined between the two annual champions in a grand final to determine the "Champion for Promotion" to Liga MX. In 2017, members of the Ascenso League were required to meet requirements to advance to the first division, and starting in 2020, promotion and relegation were eliminated in Mexico.
