As soon as I clicked the button he woke from a solid sleep. They really can hear the tone that the device emits. We initially purchased this device as a way to deter him from stealing food from our toddlers at the dining table, but it works well for getting his attention when people visit as well. It also works on our cat. The tone seems to be more startling/annoying than painful. Overall, I am very happy with how this device works!
