(14 Apr 2017) LEADIN A film poster enthusiast in Lebanon has amassed a 20,000 strong collection of the vintage pieces. He's released a book and now wants his collection displayed as an educational exhibition. STORYLINE In a side room of his publishing house "Dar Al-Furat", Abboudi Abou Jaoude preserves the history of cinema. A collection of more than 20,000 vintage local, regional and international movie posters sits on his library's shelves. Abou Jaoude has been collecting film posters since 1977 when he was just 15 years old. He began by collecting posters of his favourite actors like Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen then started adding films featuring iconic Arab singers. He explains how he began obtaining the posters: "I used to go to the cinema every week, later on I became friends with the people who work in the cinema and asked them to give me some posters of my favourite actors. There was a response from them and I got the posters." His collection contains items dating back to 1929. They include 2,000 posters from the US, 240 from Italy, 200 from France, 3,000 from Egypt, 120 from Syria, 14 from Iraq and 32 from Tunisia. But now he's worried that people don't appreciate film posters the way they used to: "Unfortunately this is a folk art that was lost with the changing of technology. In the past the picture or the poster attracted us to the film. When we go to the movies we see posters hanging at the entrance to the cinema halls: the photos attract your attention to watch the film," he says. In December 2015, Abou Jaoude released his book "TONIGHT: cinema in Lebanon", a comprehensive guide to movies filmed in Lebanon from 1929-1979. It amounts to an impressive historical document listing all the films produced and released within that period. Now he's aiming even bigger and wants a large exhibition of his posters so that younger generations can witness their beauty and importance: "I aspire to complete the project so that people can benefit from it in a wider and bigger way", he says. "And to archive in a scientific way to be able to display these posters in exhibitions so people can benefit from them and get to know this kind of art and culture that existed in our country."
