Bei klassischer Musik wird das Tempo meist am Anfang einer Komposition angegeben: nehmen wir an, dass ein Stück mit 84 = Viertel angegeben ist. Es genügt nun, wenn das Regulatorengewicht dem Pendel entlang geführt wird bis zum Zahl 84, die auf der Skale angegeben ist, alsdann kann das Pendel in Bewegung gesetz werden. Sobald das pendel einen regelmässigen Gang erreicht hat, entspricht jedes tick-tack einen Viertelnote. Wenn am Anfang eines Musikstückes angegeven wird: 84 = Halbe, so heisst das, dass das Stück auf Grund eines Tick-tack pro halbe Note gespielt werden soll. In English: The metronome indicates the tempo at which a piece of music is to be played. In classical music, the tempo is usually indicated at the beginning of a composition: let's assume that a piece is indicated as 84 = quarter note. All you have to do is move the regulator weight along the pendulum until it reaches the number 84 on the scale, then the pendulum can be set in motion. As soon as the pendulum has reached a regular motion, each tic-tac corresponds to one quarter note. If the following is indicated at the beginning of a piece of music: 84 = half note, this means that the piece should be played based on one tic-tac per half note.
