A Big Breakfast and Pancakes Yesterday we saw the sun breaking through the clouds, heavy fog, thick low clouds, sunshine, eagles and afternoon drizzle! On Jackie’s first visit to the nest, she didn’t waste any time before she pancaked and pushed some sticks out of the way. Pancaking is when the eagles lay down to test the nest and, in the process, push sticks out of the way to form a bowl for future eggs. Only a few minutes later, Shadow flew in with another colorful branch as Jackie was about to pancake again! They both snapped the twigs with pine needles off the branch and spread them around the nest. Some of those twigs ended up in the bowl which is a nice base for the fluff that will come in soon. Jackie and Shadow had mega crops when they showed up in the morning, indicating they had a nice big breakfast. Jackie’s crop was so big, she was bursting at her feather seams, and you could see her down undergarments when she climbed up on the back porch!! As they both continued to bring in sticks, arrange them around the nest you can see a definite bowl taking shape. Jackie pancaked yet again and for the first time this season, Shadow did as well. This is a good sign that their hormones are on the rise, and they are getting serious about the upcoming egg laying. Jackie pancaked four times and Shadow once. Throughout their busy day, Jackie took the time to stop for some sweet beaky kisses and Shadow showed Jackie much affection gently nibbling and tugging on her feathers. Jackie and Shadow usually start bringing in more fluff for the nest bowl closer to egg laying. The fluff might even be minimal when the eggs are laid, but they will continue to bring in more during incubation. The materials consist of pine needles, soft grass and reeds from around the lake. *In case you were wondering what the noise is you are hearing… There is a seasonal stream created by rain and snow melt near the nest tree. The stream will likely continue to run through the habitat until the spring when the area dries out.
