In mini-tutorial #17 of our series, we’ll show you how to use Excalidraw’s basic elements to easily create just about anything you need. ========================= ⬇️ CHAPTERS & INSTRUCTIONS ⬇️ 0:12 | Drawing the building blocks with basic shapes Start by selecting one of the basic shapes from the top toolbar – rectangle, diamond, or ellipse – then click on the canvas and drag with your mouse to draw that shape. Holding Shift while dragging will create an even, 1:1 shape, such as a square or a circle. Otherwise, the shape creation will follow your mouse movement. To customize the shape, make sure it’s selected and use the Preferences panel on the left. You can set: Color (stroke / background) Fill pattern (solid / hatched / cross-hatched) Stroke width (thin / bold / extra-bold) Stroke style (solid / dashed / dotted) Sloppiness = handwritten style (architect / artist / cartoonist) Edges (sharp / round) Opacity To change its width or height, either use the object handles or drag its sides. 1:52 | Showing the flow with arrow tool To create a simple arrow, select the Arrow tool and drag from one element to another – a grey binding area will appear to indicate when it’s connected to that element. For a multi-point arrow, click instead of dragging – each click will create a new segment of your arrow. Hold Shift to keep the angle clean, and press Esc once you're done. If you need to convert a simple arrow into a multi-point one, select it and press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter, or use the node handle after selecting it. You can then customize the created arrows the same way as shapes, including stroke settings, sloppiness, edges, opacity, and arrowhead types. If the arrow includes text, you’ll also see font and alignment options. 3:30 | Saying it out loud with text tool There are a few ways to create text in Excalidraw: Select the Text tool in the toolbar and click anywhere on the canvas, Double-click on the canvas, Add text directly into any shape using Enter, double-click, or the Text tool. As with any other object in Excalidraw, text appearance can be customized in the Preferences panel — choose stroke color, font size and family, alignment and its transparency. If you need more control over the text size, right-click on the canvas, open the Canvas & Shape properties, and set the specific size at the bottom of that section (after selecting any text or object). Some advanced features of the text tool: (4:25) To bind existing text to a shape, select both, right-click, and choose Bound text to the container. (7:55) To quickly wrap standalone text into a container, right-click on it and choose Wrap text in a container. 5:48 | Adding some flair with line tool Select the Line tool and drag to create a simple two-point line. As with arrows, hold Shift if you want to constrain its angle. If you start clicking instead of dragging, you’ll create a multi-point line, and each click will add a new vertex (segment). Press Esc to end the line. To use the line tool for creating complex shapes, create a multi-point line that ends where it started. This turns it into a closed shape, allowing you to apply background color and fill pattern. Need to edit the line later? Select it and press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter to access the line editor, where you can add or remove vertices.
