IK run of Hills Creek (MF Willamette contributory) on March 18, 2025. Short but wonderful class 3/4 whitewater run. Stunning scenery and thrilling water. Pool drop, but much action, making for a full workout. Could be lapped by those with extra energy. Level was 11.2ft on Hills Creek gauge. I would consider this a minimum level (for an IK anyway) given grabby rocks just under water around several must-make moves. The issue of level on this run is tricky given that the gorge section is very sensitive to level changes, and higher levels there create some challenges and potential safety issues. The official level gauge is at one of the widest spots on the creek, whereas the gorge is just a few feet wide at places, meaning a change of an inch at the gauge means several inches at the gorge. Put-in 100 yards below “Room of Doom” (see https://wheelsandwater.blogspot.com/2... bonus video of "Room of Doom" is included at the end of the video), take out at Hills Creek Crossing Bridge, Hills Creek reservoir. About three miles total from put-in to take out. At higher reservoir surface levels, about 1/3 of a mile at the end goes underwater as the dam fills (and a few hundred feet were under water when we ran it). At lower reservoir levels, on the other hand, about 1/2 mile of fun class 2/2+ to an alternate take-out can be added to the three miles. One portage this time, at “Roller.” Hazardous wood encroached the drop on the right—that drop requires passing through a couple small lead in steps and standing waves, then traveling toward the right traversing fast current to bullseye the narrow drop far right, and land it with boat angled diagonally to the right to avoid high-siding or pinning on a boulder below. On the left, a knife-like split log was just under water at the V drop—that drop also requiring paddling through some steps and standing waves, all the while making a very tight turn left, in current, then hitting the V. Following very closely below “Roller” is “Coaster,” with fast current between, meaning any problem at “Roller” will have consequences. The run passes through the former Kitson Springs resort and current Camp Huntington, which is privately owned. Much appreciation to Scouting America's Pacific Crest Council for graciously granting us permission to walk through the property to scout that section in January 2025! Thanks to Noah Moss for encouraging us to take on this run, and taking part in one of the scouting trips! #kayaking #Oregon #whitewater #creeking #creek #scenery #Willamette
