Janolus hyalinus is now my new favourite nudibranch I have ever seen because they are so pretty and lovely and make me very happy. They are a super rare species with currently only 44 recordings in the UK (as of Feb 2025)! Found by a friend under a rock by the low water tide; they were the first sea slug he found for this rockpooling session. J. hyalinus can grow up to 30mm and are quite a wide species with a short tail. Their body is a beautiful brown to yellow and have the coolest cerata, being transparent green/yellow covered in warty protrusions. The cerata can have brown/white speckling and a dark brown digestive gland in each cerata. The rhinophores are also very pretty, having a truncated apex but are elongated with rib-like lamellae with more warts and yellow/white speckling. In the videos you can also see their eyespots at the base of their rhinophores. Like a lot of the Janolus species, there is a caruncle present between the rhinophores which is an elevated ridge between the rhinophores that is presumed to be a sensory function. For Janolus hyalinus is is quite elongated and the same color as their body. Janolus hyalinus feeds on bryozoans of Bugula fastigiata, Scrupicellaria spp., and Tricellaria inopinata. J. hyalinus is also known to drop their cerata when they are stressed, these cerata continue to move after detachment to confuse predators. I am beyond elated to see this species, they are truly beautiful and if I wasn't a human but rather a nudibranch id be this one!
