Frölunda Torg shopping centre is in the middle of a unique project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions with an integrated energy system. By storing heat energy underground, the 100,000 m² shopping centre can be heated with solar power, even in the winter Henrik Pihlblad, Technical Manager for Shopping Centres, Skandia Fastigheter Gothenburg: –The size of the property is what makes this project special. During large parts of the year we utilise a number of different technical systems, whereby we both heat and cool the property at the same time. Usually we produce cooling, which really has to do with moving heat energy from one place to another. And now, instead of moving it out from the building, we store it underground. In this way we have created a sort of battery function for solar power, which is difficult to obtain. The heat pump technology comes from Energy Machines and is powered by solar cells on the shopping centre’s roof, which drastically reduces the need to purchase electricity. Energy Machines drive the entire process, from the idea phase to optimisation of the finished system, so that no energy is wasted. –It provides me with a challenge. They are enormously focused on not letting out any energy from a property, which is why they always try to recycle the energy in some other technical system. I really like the entire concept, that they look at every possibility to actually utilise the energy that we provide to a property. Skandia Fastigheter is heavily focused on the issue of sustainability, and this is a good building block within the environmental area.
