What Am I to You? - Norah Jones - Solo Acoustic Guitar Cover (Fingerstyle)

My solo guitar arrangement of the Norah Jones hit song from the album “Feels Like Home” (released in 2004). This song is a great example of Norah’s unique and wonderful blend of Pop, Blues and Jazz styles. Whilst being fairly standard in terms of the song’s structure, there are some really nice and interesting chord embellishments throughout the song, as well as some nice bluesy guitar and keyboard licks, especially in between the vocal lines. This arrangement is in the original key of C Major and in standard guitar tuning. There is quite a lot of variation in the vocal melody throughout the song, requiring the use of different shapes of the same chords up the neck, in order to get some of the higher melody notes in. Most notably, going between the standard ‘C’ shape on the third fret to the root 6 on the 8th fret. Likewise, with the Am from the standard open position (first fret) to the 5th fret position. Being in C major makes this easier because all the open strings can be used, which also works well for adding sustain between chord transitions. Overall, I just busked this one out a bit, trying to reference parts of the guitar and organ licks / fills from different parts of the song and improvise around the general feel . The slow tempo of the song does leave a lot of space for improvised lead lines, which I’ve heard the band take advantage of in various live recordings. Another thing that can be seen from many of the live performances is that it feels weirdly compelling to play it at a slightly faster tempo than the recorded version as well, something I succumbed to, playing it a few clicks faster than the original.
