Following her unsuccessful bid for the position of NRM Deputy National Chairperson (Female), former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga was advised by geopolitical analyst and journalist Sam Kazibwe to consider retiring from active politics in order to safeguard her legacy. This suggestion came despite an open invitation extended to her by National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Bobi Wine, to join the opposition party. However, Kadaga appears unwilling to step away from the political stage. This was evident during an event she organized yesterday in Jinja District, which supporters described as a welcome home celebration following her exit from the CEC race. In her address, Kadaga acknowledged internal party conflicts, claiming that there are individuals within the NRM working against her. Nevertheless, she firmly stated that she has no intention of leaving the ruling party. Kadaga’s continued maneuvering within the political space may be interpreted as a reluctance to relinquish the influence and privileges she has accumulated over the years—an example, perhaps, of how power can be deeply intoxicating, as Dr. Kazibwe previously noted. Below is my analysis of this unfolding political moment and what it suggests about power, loyalty, and legacy in Uganda’s political landscape.
