With standards of journalism increasingly under threat from hostile economic, technological and political forces, how do we protect traditional norms of ethics and professionalism? How do we insulate practitioners from both corporate and state pressures, and who determines appropriate journalistic values in a digitalised, online world? This talk will address the sociological questions of structure and agency within media institutions as well as philosophical questions around a sustainable ethics of journalism in a “post-truth” world. This lecture was held at the 2017 Holberg Symposium: "Ethics for Communication" in honour of Holberg Laureate Onora O'Neill. BIOGRAPHY: Steven Barnett is professor of communications at the University of Westminster and an established writer and broadcaster who specialises in media policy, regulation, and the theory and practice of journalism. He has frequently served as adviser to ministers and parliamentary committees in the UK.
