The Malaysian Batik is both an art and a craft. Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. The traditional way of making Batik is by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting. The applied wax then resist dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water and repeating if multiple colours are desired. The Malaysian batik is also famous for its geometrical designs, such as spirals. Malaysia has acclaimed batik as one of the nation's heritage, inherited from the Nusantara common heritage influence. It is believed that batik making begun in the Javanese island in the 12th century and spread to various places within the Nusantara, including the Malay States of Kelantan , Terengganu and Pahang. Batik production has now spread throughout Malaysia and found its own design niche which is contemporary fresh and free style.
