Multnomah County Commissioners vote for more accountability for people caught with drugs

Multnomah County commissioners voted unanimously to pass a resolution Thursday making significant changes to how its deflection program works. Deflection programs aim to deter people arrested for drug possession from facing charges and jail time by providing access to treatment and recovery services. The county created the deflection program after Oregon lawmakers recriminalized possession of hard drugs. The new criminal charges took effect in September 2024. The program is one of 28 statewide funded in part through a grant program administered by the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC). A KATU investigation that examined all 28 programs statewide found Multnomah County’s program was the most lenient.
