This research consists of the simulation process and experimental validation of melting process of a Phase Change Material (PCM) for thermal energy storage. Paraffin wax RT35 was chosen as the PCM in this research. An experiment of melting of a PCM specimen was carried out and the simulated using ANSYS (Fluent) version R1 2020 software. During the experiment, an infrared camera was used to observe the change of temperature and liquid fraction of the PCM. By using Ansys (Fluent), the contours of temperature and liquid fraction of PCM were simulated. Both of them were observed at regular intervals of 30 seconds and ended at a total melting time of 900 seconds (15 minutes). The infrared camera and contours can help in determining the changes in temperature and motion of melting interface with increase in time. The change of the liquid fraction with time is also discussed, which tells us about the percentage of melted PCM at different instants of time. Both experimental and simulation graphs of the change of temperature and liquid fraction with time showed great agreement between each other. #PhaseChangeMaterial #ThermalEnergyStorage Amirjan Bin Nawabjan Department of ECE School of Electrical Engineering Faculty of Engineering Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Johor Bahru, Malaysia. amirjan@utm.my
