March 1967. Firebase Kate, South Vietnam. 23 pounds of stamped steel. One nickname: The Pig. Specialist Victor Renza didn't see a masterpiece of engineering; he saw a 43-inch burden that cycled 550 rounds per minute. In the Central Highlands, the M60 wasn't just a machine gun—it was a target. The North Vietnamese Army had a simple rule: kill the gunner first. The life expectancy of an M60 gunner was measured in seconds. For seven months, Renza defied the brutal mathematics of the jungle. He mastered the Pig’s every flaw—the backward safety, the overheating barrels, and the jams that occurred with lethal frequency. He watched his friends fall while he hammered away with 7.62mm rounds, turning the jungle into a horizontal rain of steel. Then came the handoff. On May 17th, Renza passed "Number One Gun" to a 19-year-old replacement named Joe DeLong. Renza thought the kid was ready. He was wrong. Twenty-four hours later, the platoon was surrounded by an NVA battalion. The Pig was captured. DeLong never came home. This is the story of the M60—a weapon designed by committee and built by the lowest bidder. It was heavy, unreliable, and hated by the men who carried it. But when the ambush hit, it was the only thing that made the impossible possible. Watch until the end to see how this "obsolete" machine became the difference between a retreat and a massacre.
