In "Rune Factory 4,” the protagonist rides an airship to the Norad Kingdom’s town of Selphia with an important gift to deliver to the town’s resident God. Upon sudden assault by Sechs Empire soldiers hiding aboard, the protagonist incurs an amnesia-inducing blow to the head and falls from the airship onto the very horns of whom they initially seeked—Selphia’s God and Native Dragon of Wind, Ventuswill. Assuming the protagonist to be the Norad prince whose company she has soon been expecting, Ventuswill makes orders to arrange for the protagonist to reside in Selphia and carry out their duties as a noble. Doubtful but with no better option to entertain until their memories return, the protagonist agrees to serve as Selphia’s representative prince/princess. Not long after becoming acquainted to the gentle town and its nostalgic fields, the protagonist and Ventuswill are met with the arrival of the true Norad prince, Arthur, which inspires a flighty panic due to the evident handful of misunderstandings. After a discussion of logistics, Arthur willingly renounces his princely roles to the protagonist, who then resumes a lively lifestyle that kindly tends both crops and Selphia’s people. Later, while exploring a forest on the outskirts of town, the protagonist encounters an unusual monster that transforms into a human girl upon defeat, which unexpectedly becomes the first in a series of events that are mysteriously connected to the decline in the land’s runes, as well as the health of Ventuswill, who appears knowledgeable but remains reticent on the subject.
