The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 is a mid-engined, four-wheel drive car produced in 200 specimens required for homologation in Group B. With the EVO versions, the French manufacturer participated in the World Rally Championships from 1984 to 1986, winning two constructors' titles and two titles. pilots. In 1987 he participated in the Rally of the Pharaohs and in the Paris-Dakar where he also raced in the following two years and won in 1987 and 1988. Peugeot had always had an excellent relationship with the world rally thanks to the 404, 504 and 104 but had never managed to win a championship, in fact the cars it lined up were designed to compete in specific races and did not have the versatility that would have allowed to excel on all terrains. Things changed when Talbot, a minor brand of Peugeot, won the 1981 world championship with the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, an under-funded project that could count on the right people. So at the end of 1981 the Talbot became Peugeot-Talbot with Jean Todt, the former navigator of Guy Fréquelin, at the wheel, and with the aim of giving the assault to the world championship in the hard-fought Group B. Scheduled for 1983, the EVO made its racing debut only at the 1984 Tour de Corse due to development delays which proved more complicated than expected. The general layout follows that of the road car except for some improvements. For example, the braking system has been improved with the adoption of 4-piston calipers instead of 1 and the manual distribution of braking by the driver. In addition, the engine power has been increased to 350-370 hp thanks to the adoption of a KKK turbine with boost pressure increased to 1.4 bar. The weight of the car is approximately 960 kg. However, the particular configuration of the engine created some stability problems on the jumps: in fact the crankshaft and all the gearbox components were placed exactly along the axis passing through the center of gravity of the car so that if jumping accelerated, the nose would point to the sky. , while if the gas was turned off, the nose would point to the ground by rotating around this axis. Exactly one year later, at the 1985 Tour de Corse, the EVO2 made its racing debut. In many ways, the EVO2 is considered the swan song of Group B, the car that represents the maximum technical and performance expression of the 1980s rallies together with the Lancia Delta S4. The most evident differences with its progenitor are the showy aerodynamic appendages designed to improve grip, which was compromised by the higher performance, and to prevent the car from landing on the nose after the jumps, the rear wing was in fact capable of creating a downforce of up to 230 kg to keep the car balanced when in the air. The previous KKK turbocharger was abandoned, replaced by a model supplied by Garrett with operating pressure up to 2.5 bar, thanks to which the engine reached 560 hp in the latest evolution. The greater power also led to a revision of the chassis with the adoption of carbon fiber in addition to steel, the chassis in fact had to withstand greater stresses than the previous version and had to ensure that the car's congenital agility and lightness did not change. in a chronic unwearability due to excess power, this solution allowed a substantial saving in the weight of the car, which dropped to about 930 kg.. At the start of the championship, 205 and Ari Vatanen immediately proved to be favorites for the final victory. At the Monte Carlo Rally Vatanen won, despite an 8-minute penalty, with a 5-minute lead over Walter Röhrl and his new Audi Sport quattro followed by Timo Salonen in the second 205. In the next race in Sweden the script was more or less the same. same: Vatanen first followed by an Audi Quattro (this time by Blomqvist) and Salonen. The battle between Vatanen and Blomqvist in Sweden was very close, but in the end the Finn managed to prevail thanks to the agility of the Peugeot against which the Quattro Sport, heavier and markedly understeer, could not do anything. The third competitor, the Lancia 037, on the other hand was beginning to feel the weight of the years, it had appeared for the first time in 1982, and because of the rear-wheel drive alone it was only competitive on asphalt. At the rally in Portugal the hierarchy within the team was reversed: Vatanen, who retired due to a puncture, gave the victory to Salonen, who jumped to the top of the drivers' championship, followed by Miki Biasion and Walter Röhrl. At the Tour de Corse the EVO2 made its debut with Bruno Saby at the wheel who finished the rally in second position. The Tour of that year was marked by a very serious accident that cost Attilio Bettega's life and caused the FIA to begin to question the meaning of Group B where the racing cars began to reach very high powers without adequate safety standards.
