Cleveland Police Detain Knife-Wielding Suspect at Hopkins Airport

(Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Cleveland, Ohio — On July 8, 2024, a Cleveland Police officer approached a man sitting on the floor near the north security checkpoint at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and asked about a machete in his possession. The man, identified as 37-year-old Sameer Farraj, claimed the machete was "treasure" and not a weapon. The officer instructed Farraj to turn around, but he instead ran away, bumping into someone in his attempt to escape. Farraj then held the knife near his own neck, prompting police to fire Tasers. However, the Tasers failed to penetrate the layers of clothing Farraj was wearing. Farraj then jumped over a wall to get behind an airline ticket counter, shouting that he was "being peaceful" while ignoring commands to get on the ground. Body camera footage shows Farraj slashing the knife in the air and demanding police to put their guns on the floor. As officers moved closer, Farraj jumped over another wall with the knife in hand. Screams can be heard on the recording as Farraj ran towards people waiting at the security checkpoint. He then stopped and jumped over another wall, landing on steps below, where police finally handcuffed and arrested him. According to a police report, investigators confiscated a machete, two knives, a hatchet, and a weighted jump rope from Farraj. He was taken for a psychological evaluation following his arrest.
