Due to the current energy crisis, the EU is reaching a critical point in the energy transition to achieve climate-neutrality and a net-zero emission economy. Against this background, DR-RISE’s main objective is to demonstrate and promote the benefits of Demand response in the residential sector for all involved actors. Demand Response consists of the willingness to reduce or increase one’s energy consumption in response to peaks in demand or supply on the electricity market, receiving remuneration in exchange for this availability. The EU-cofunded project DR-RISE started in June 2023; it is a multidisciplinary project that will leverage the experience of the consortium partners in techno-economic, social, and systemic fields. The consortium is composed of 14 partners from different European countries, coordinated by IDENER, an interdiscoplinary company focused on solving multifaceted challenges through scientific programming. The overall DR-RISE concept is built on top of 4 main value proposition elements: Sound technical solutions: DR-RISE proposes a cutting-edge architecture based on smart nodes where each of them comprises all the required tools and services to offer DR. Best design principles: DR-RISE will be built upon privacy and security by design principles from the inception. Specific actions to boost DR adoption: The proposed approach is fully aligned with the EU’s vision to place the citizens at the heart of the solution and empower them so that they can make informed decisions. The whole DRRISE solution will be co-created and co-develop together with the citizens. Extensive demonstration activities: The platform will be extensively demonstrated in three different EU countries, focusing on gathering the most diverse environments. Despite the residential DR potential and its alignment with the EU targets, active participation and engagement by the end-consumers in these mechanisms is still evolving. The solutions developed within DR-RISE will build on the Council of European Energy Regulators and the European Consumer Organisation 2030 vision for energy consumers to ensure they are designed and developed with the citizen at the centre. By promoting the benefits of demand response, the DR-RISE project will seek to contribute to the improvement of energy use in a conscious and efficient manner for our planet.
