SCC Concert Chorus sings this example of the “drum gaita” (gaita de tambora), a type of folk music from the Zulia state in the western part of Venezuela which combines elements of Iberian, African and indigenous music. Arranger Cristian Grases wrote this arrangement for the Cantoria Juvenil de la Schola Cantorum de Caracas (Youth Choir of the Music School of Caracas), which he also directed for a time. Spanish translation: Where did the dove that the sparrow hawk caught go? Where is the dove that the sparrow hawk caught? At Ramona’s gate, Oh look, I found it plucked. All in life is false, death is the only truth. For there is where pomp and vanity run out. Why wouldn’t I cry when my mother dies? I wish I could bring her back to life. I’m leaving, Maria, I leave the dove there for you. Open its beak and make it eat, I’m leaving food there. I’m leaving, I say goodbye even though the gaita is very good. Beat this drum hard so my sorrow cheers up. SCC provides a pre-professional choral experience to students ages 7-18, from diverse backgrounds. Founded by Artistic Director Emeritus Christopher G. Guerra and led by Artistic Director Michael Wu, five performing ensembles promote self-expression in singers, celebrate the diverse musical traditions of our residents, and engage talented youth in joy-filled and uplifting music-making. SCC also performs with professional orchestras, other choral groups, and featured artists in ensemble performances, allowing Strathmore to provide a living, breathing, singing presence in our community. https://www.strathmore.org/community-... #StrathmoreEducation GUEST ARTISTS Tony Thomas, Choreographer Donato Soviero, Guitar Zack Pride, Electric Bass Lenny Robinson, Drum Set Amy Hughes, Percussion ARTISTIC STAFF Michael Wu, DMA, Artistic Director; Apprentice, Concert, and Tenor Bass Chorus Ann Bartlow, Collaborative Pianist, Preparatory, Apprentice and Treble Chorus Alice E.
