What is the function of the gallbladder in our body? The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver. The gallbladder holds a digestive fluid called bile that's released into your small intestine. The capacity of the gallbladder is around 30ml to 50 ml. Most common causes of gallbladder stones - Genetic reasons Increasing age Female gender Diabetes Gallstones are more common in females than males. Rates of gallstones are two to three times higher in females, this is mostly a phenomenon of childbearing age. Obesity is also a reason that increases your risk of forming gallstones. Also, it is found that people who consume tobacco and alcohol on a regular basis have a high risk of gallstone formation. How is a gallstone formed? Basically, there are two types of stones in the gallbladder namely cholesterol stones and pigmented stones. The cholesterol stones are formed when the fat levels in your body increase which further increases the levels of cholesterol in the bile. This forms gallstones. Pigmented stones are formed when bile salts & bile pigments are formed in large numbers. This can happen due to certain disorders such as alcoholism, thalassemia disorders, etc. Is it possible to avoid the risk factors of gallstones?
