"Miho Yamaji's performance of Sanka (Song of Praise) was a musically captivating experience. From the opening song of praise, the intricate polyphonic textures, expressive changes in dynamics and tempi Ms Yamaji took her audience on a powerful moving musical journey." ~ Musical Review Ms Yamaji is more than a virtuoso performer on koto. She is a cultural and musical ambassador. As she said, quoting the composer Tadao Sawai: ""When you come into contact with the kindness of people and the depth of art, emotions arise from within your body and flow out of your body, and I expressed this in my songs." (Tadao Sawai), as Ms Yamaji did in her performance her performance of this musical masterpiece. Sanka is a virtuosic masterpiece; the composer Tadao Sawai (1978) wrote: "Sanka may emerge in response to the beauty of nature, love of humanity, and depth of art. When the experience of the sublime within oneself overflows, dreams and poems are produced". This performance at Marys Woods Historic Chapel was one six performances Ms. Yamaji gave during the week of October 15 - 20 2024 marked her first visit to Oregon. Ms Yamaji started Koto lessons from the age of five. Graduated with a Bachelor of Music(Musicology from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1994. Completed the NHK 42nd "Hougaku Ginoushya Ikuseikai". Studied under Kazue Sawai as an intern in the "Japanese Fine Art Internship Program" sponsored by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. Miho has performed internationally (throughout Europe, Asia, and the U.S.) for more than a decade. Ms. Yamaji has engaged in a wide spectrum of performances, such as a "Noh" stage concert, dinner concerts at hotels, sessions with "Rakugo", and sessions with chorus ensembles, orchestras, and bands. Ms. Yamaji is a member of the "Doseikai" music group of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and its affiliated alumni Koto organization, "Morinokai". Ms. Yamaji teaches the Koto at Okayama University and composes music, as well as giving recitals in Japan and overseas. She lives in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture.
