(12 Nov 2025) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Belem, Brazil - 12 November 2025 1. Various of Whaia stretching and preparing to paddle canoe 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Whaia, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "It’s a deep vibration to paddle a canoe, to paddle like my ancestors used to do, to be living and breathing it in today's times. So to be with the Huni Kuin family of the Amazon and be in the canoes together and move as one. It's like we're bringing that ancient serpent alive, you know, that those waters, we're mixing our waters together and we're breathing together and singing together and praying together and you know it really forms a sense of solidarity and unity and unification.” 3. Various of Whaia paddling canoe 4. Wide of people paddling canoe 5. Various of people relaxing in canoes during break 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Whaia, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "We’re here at COP 30 in Brazil, in Belem. And we just paddled Waka with our family, the Huniquin, as A Wisdom Keeper delegation.” 7. Various of participants paddling 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacob Johns, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "And so we wanted this canoe paddle as a ceremonial offering to our relatives to prove through the spirits of this land that we are coming with a good heart and with good intention. And more importantly, that we must stand together, that governments fail us over and over and over again. And it's these oppressive systems that want to convince us that we're separate from each other.” 9. Various of Jacob Johns preparing for canoe paddle 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacob Johns, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "In our world that's full of emotion and chaos, we must use our original teachings that guide us into a future that is logical, that pulls us out of the chaos of emotions and allows us to broadcast truth. And hopefully with this intention, we're able to shift the hearts and minds of world leaders, especially as we walk in the halls of the UNFCCC, especially when we come into these halls and we advocate to our policy points.” 11. Various of flotilla 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Whaia, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "You know we talk about our intergenerational wisdom and unless we bring our children with us on these journeys, unless we teach our children our ways, that gets lost. So it might seem really like a small thing to kind of you know go on a canoe waka ride but it's deeper than that. It's passing on or awakening those parts of our DNA that are deep in us, to help us remember who we truly are.” 13. Various of Whaia singing during canoe paddle 14. SOUNDBITE (English) Whaia, member, A Wisdom Keepers: "We do such heavy work and so weighed down as people and humans with all the busy-ness and all the stuff. We need to come back and find our joy and simplicity in life. And it was so, so beautiful to hold on to the front of the canoe together. And just smile and laugh and be happy and be free.” 15. Various of Whaia and daughter, Moana, swimming in the river STORYLINE: As United Nation climate talks get underway in Belem, a different kind of conference is kicking off: the People’s Summit, a gathering of activists, organizers, environmentalists and Indigenous groups from around the world. On a flotilla of boats or in canoes, they celebrated the joy of coming together in community as they paddled or cruised at the gateway to the Amazon. Whaia, a member of the A Wisdom Keepers delegation and a Ngāti Kahungunu woman of Aotearoa, what Māori call New Zealand, paddled one of the canoes with her daughter, Moana. AP Video by Joshua A.
