(1 Jan 2018) Marijuana legalization arrived Monday in California with lots of hoopla, but only a handful of cities will initially have retail outlets ready to sell recreational pot. Consumers and businesses alike were eager to see what they hoped would be positive effects of recreational legalization. "We're entering into a world where we have very clear rules about what we can and can't do," said Charles Boldwyn, Chief Compliance Officer of ShowGrow, a dispensary in Orange County. "Now we have very prescriptive guidelines so for us that helps to create a level playing field," Boldwyn said. Customers were hopeful the legalization would help change the public's perception of people who use marijuana. "We'll have people coming out of the woodwork you wouldn't have even expected to try it," said Bryce St. Peter, 23, who bought marijuana at ShowGrow with his mother. The nation's most populous state joins a growing list of other states, and the nation's capital, where so-called recreational marijuana is permitted even though the federal government continues to classify pot as a controlled substance, like heroin and LSD. California voters in 2016 made it legal for adults 21 and older to grow, possess and use limited quantities of marijuana, but it wasn't legal to sell it for recreational purposes until Monday.
