Join me for a walk through the heart of the third-biggest settlement on Tyneside, South Shields! Located four miles downstream from Newcastle at the mouth of the mighty River Tyne, South Shields is one of the oldest towns in the region, with centuries of history from its origins as a fishing town, to an industrial hub and a modern tourist destination! Not to mention its remarkable Roman heritage from almost 1,900 years ago... On our walk around South Shields, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the Old Town Hall, Market Place, The Word, the Shields Ferry Landing, the River Tyne, St. Hilda's Church, King Street, South Shields Metro Station, the Ship & Royal Pub, the statue of The Golden Lion, South Shields Museum & Gallery, The Kirkpatrick Pub, the statue of John Simpson Kirkpatrick ('the man with the donkey'), Ocean Road, the former Brack Memorial Hall, and the remains of Arbeia Roman Fort.
