A sentence fragment is a group of words that lacks one or all three of the components required to form a complete sentence. You will also learn about the three main types of sentence fragments that you may encounter: (1) Fragments that require a subject or a predicate: These fragments are missing either the person/thing performing the action (subject) or the action itself (predicate). (2) Fragments that seem to have both a subject and a predicate but still don't express a complete thought: We'll discuss how these fragments leave readers hanging and how to turn them into complete sentences. (3) Fragments that need an independent clause to complete the thought: Learn how to identify dependent clauses that can’t stand alone and how to connect them to independent clauses for a full, clear message. At the end of this lesson, there is a short practice quiz where you will be asked to correct the sentence fragments with your own subjects and predicates.
