Transfemoral TAVR

Selected high-risk patients with aortic stenosis may be candidates for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In this case, the procedure is usually performed through the main artery in the leg (femoral artery) instead of through a surgical incision in the chest. The heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass) is not used. The procedure begins by threading a wire through the diseased aortic valve. After opening the tightly narrowed valve by inflating a balloon inside it, the new valve is inserted on a catheter with the wire as a guide. Because the long-term success of this type of valve replacement is still under review, it is reserved for patients for whom open surgery is considered to be too dangerous.
