** Note: Video speed is halved for ease of viewing, in field, action is twice fast!!! ** This video is part of a series of videos on "Indian Pelagic Birds" taken during various pelagic/offshore trips organized by keralabirder, Malabar Natural History Society and SA Hussain Memorial Trust, many with the help of Dept of Fisheries, Kerala. The trips have been conducted mainly from Kannur and Mangalore in the South-West coast of India. The main intention here is to show the birds and their behavior, and provide a basic reference for pelagic bird recognition from Indian coast. Though the bird books says otherwise, we have found that Wedge-tailed Shearwaters are not common in south-west coast of India, but are indeed rare as indicated by a single record till now. In any case, it is quite certain that they are relatively very rare compared to Flesh-footed Shearwaters which we have found in 100s in many trips, where as we were unable to find Wedge-tailed even after specfically checking for the same. The bird in the video was found during a pre-monsoon Pelagic Trip organized by Keralabirder and MNHS from Kannur, Kerala, India in end May, 2011. The bird was seen swimming in an area where Flesh-footed Shearwaters, Bridled Terns and Sooty Terns were also present. Compared to Flesh-footed Shearwaters, note the thinner neck, and thinner looking all dark beak, long tail projection and in flight, the wedge shaped tail. Footage date - 28th May, 2011 Music Credits (sorry, had missed to include in the clip) - Album: Music from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston Title: Three Italian Songs (trans.
