The brief here was for a new-build in Harrison on a relatively small block where the footprint of the house was proportionally large leaving little space to work in the garden itself. The clients were a family with kids and a dog so we tailored the design with that in mind, ensuring the lawn variety selected was heat tolerant and hard wearing. They also loved cooking with home grown produce so we very carefully assessed the site for the best aspect for the veggie-gardens and fruit trees, noting that heat tolerant varieties were all chosen with sound horticultural knowledge of Canberra’s specific conditions. As with most new-builds there was a lot of radiant heat coming off concrete paths and the house itself in close proximity to the narrow garden beds so we selected tough heat tolerant natives and Mediterranean plants which would cope with this.
