The term ‘hipster’ originated in the 1940s, referring to the subculture of fans of Jazz music, who adopted a particular style of dress, humour and laid-back attitude. Today, the ‘hipster’ is a stereotype of young adults who have ‘non-mainstream’ interests. For example, they listen to indie music, drink craft beer, live in the inner city and have beards. A hipster is someone who listens to bands you’ve never heard of and aims to engage in ‘alternative’ styles and ideas that haven’t become popular in ‘mainstream’ culture. How can a plant be hipster, you might ask? Well, if you go by history, hipster plants are a little bit edgy but perhaps on the cusp of becoming popular and fashionable, but hasn’t quite gotten there yet.
