Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd) is a major city in South East Wales, situated on the River Usk and historically located within the county of Gwent. While Gwent was abolished as an administrative county in 1996, it remains a "preserved county" for ceremonial purposes, and the name continues to define the wider region and its public services, such as Gwent Police. Current News & Local Events (January 2026) Rugby Derby: An "all-Gwent" cup derby between Newport RFC and Pontypool is scheduled for the evening of 29 January 2026 at Newport Stadium. Enforcement Action: Gwent Police recently seized over £65,000 worth of illegal vapes and cigarettes during raids across the city. Flooding Alerts: As of late January 2026, fresh flood warnings have been issued for Gwent rivers following heavy rainfall. Upcoming Activity: A Spirit of Wales Distillery Tasting Night is taking place on 6 February 2026 at the Maesglas Industrial Estate. Key Attractions & Heritage Newport Transporter Bridge: One of only six operational transporter bridges in the world and a major local landmark. Caerleon Roman Fortress: Located just upstream, it features well-preserved Roman barracks, a bathhouse, and an amphitheatre. Tredegar House: A 17th-century Charles II mansion set in a 90-acre park, formerly home to the Morgan family. Newport Wetlands: A 438-hectare nature reserve on the Gwent Levels that provides habitats for rare birds and wildlife. Newport Market: A recently regenerated Victorian market building that now houses a popular food court and independent traders. Living & Economy As of January 2026, the average house price in Newport is £246,456, with average monthly rent at £1,168. The city is a hub for high-technology industries, particularly in the aerospace and semiconductor sectors along the M4 corridor.
