Opened in 2014, it was the first covered market hall of its kind in the Netherlands, combining a vibrant food market with residential apartments built into its massive arch-shaped structure. Designed by architectural firm MVRDV, the building features a dramatic glass façade and a colorful, 11,000-square-meter interior artwork called “Horn of Plenty” by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, depicting oversized fruits, vegetables, and other food imagery. Beneath the floor, archaeological excavations during construction unearthed artifacts from Rotterdam’s medieval past, now displayed inside the hall, connecting the modern space to the city’s deep historical roots. The Markthal has since become a major cultural and culinary landmark in Rotterdam.
