Are there circumstances in which non lethal options for self defense are appropriate? The TASER C2 is an electronic control device (ECD) designed to be a non-lethal option for civilian self-defense. It fires two probes to a distance of up to 15' in order to disrupt neuromuscular communication. In that way, it disables an opponent without relying on a pain response. At first look, the C2 resembles an ergonomic flashlight. Its slim handheld form is simple, compact, and lightweight (only 5.36oz, unloaded). The operation is intuitive. Simply slide open the cover of the trigger button, point, and press the trigger button. To make deployment in low light easier, the C2 features aim assistance in the form of a laser sight and LED light. One 6V lithium power magazine will power 50 30 second charges, and a small LED under the trigger button serves as a battery life indicator. As a biology student, what this reviewer finds most interesting about the TASER is how it works. Compressed nitrogen gas propels the two probes toward the target. Then, about 7 watts of electricity flow through the probes for a maximum of 30 seconds per trigger button press. The probes can imbed themselves in the attacker's skin, but don't need to in order to function. The Shaped Pulse™ allows the spark to penetrate up to 1" of clothing (per probe, 2" cumulative) before it contacts the skin. When both probes connect to the assailant, a small electrical pulse flows through the probes and into the aggressor. The more space between the two probes, the more effective the charge is. The cleverest part about this is that the pulse from the C2 mimics the electrical signal the body's own nervous system uses to communicate between the brain and the muscles. The end result is a sort of electrical interference. Let's say the neuromuscular function is like two people having a conversation. Sometimes the body has things to say to the brain (these would be sensory impulses, such as sight, sound, touch, etc.), and sometimes the brain has things to say to the body (contracting muscles to balance, throw a punch, run, etc.). The electrical pulse from the C2 acts like a third person yelling over the conversation. It's confusing for the body and nervous system to make sense of their signals while the TASER is "talking" to both of them at the same time. This disrupts body function without doing any lasting harm to the body itself. TASER International calls this "NMI" or neuromuscular interference. This element is also what gives TASERs an edge in self-defense over "stun guns." Interfering with neuromuscular communication does not depend on the attacker's threshold for pain. And, in the rare case that the charge from the two probes does not stop the threat, directly contacting the electrodes on the face of the C2 to the attacker increases the overall NMI effect. If there is no cartridge connected to the C2, its electrodes can still serve as a close range threat deterrent with its "drive stun" function. An electric current passes between the two electrodes when they make direct contact with the aggressor, much like how a "stun gun" works. This backup function may not be as effective as the projectile probes, but it may buy the user enough time to prepare an additional cartridge. While the TASER sends a continual electrical pulse through the body, the affected individual is physically incapable of controlling their muscles. The experience of having all one's muscles contracting at once is described to be one of acute discomfort. However, if there is a concern that it is not enough to completely discourage an attacker, the C2 is capable of a sustained charge for 30 seconds at a time. TASER International, Inc. recommends that the user actually set the C2 down and leave the scene with the TASER still pulsing. Their suggestion is to use this time to contact the police and to get to safety, instead of trying to handle the situation on their own. In fact, if someone uses the TASER in this manner and has to abandon the unit, TASER International, Inc. will replace it. That is my overview of the TASER C2, but I've left out an important part: an operational demonstration. For my next video, either, I will be "tased," or I will chicken out and "tase" someone else in order to provide an account of the effects of the TASER. ...I am not looking forward to this. --------- Music was composed on FL Studio 10 Producer using RX files from P5 Audio and are royalty free for commercial purposes.
