Embryo transfer is the technique of placing the embryos into the uterus and it is a critical part of the IVF process. Many studies have shown that the chance for pregnancy varies significantly based on the doctor performing the embryo transfer. Pregnancy rates are highest when an embryo transfer is performed with ultrasound guidance. Therefore, on the day of the embryo transfer, you will be asked to fill your bladder. This increases the view on ultrasound and straightens the uterus to make the transfer easier. The doctor should clean the uterine opening, known as the cervix, by first wiping the outer portion with a moist gauze and then rinsing the inner portion. This helps reduce the chances that the embryos will get caught in the sticky cervical mucus. The catheter with the embryos is then advanced through the cervical canal into the uterine cavity. The tip of the catheter should be about a centimeter from the top of the cavity. The doctor then flushes the catheter contents into the uterus and removes the catheter. It is common to rest for a few minutes afterward but this is not critical.
