Check out my Free Illustration Mini Workshop where I share my journey from Amateur to Pro: https://www.thedrawingcodex.com/illus... You will get some simple advice on how to get more detail and polish in your work. How to think about composition. And my thoughts on how to prepare for professional work. Most artists waste years doing studies and exercises that never actually improve their art - here's why practicing through real projects is the only way to truly get better. Art education has created a false separation between learning and making. The traditional model treats studies, exercises, and foundational drills as prerequisites that must be completed before the real work of making art can begin. This approach borrows from academic education where knowledge precedes action, but art is a fundamentally different learning modality. The problem is not that studies are useless. Foundation work has genuine value. The problem is that studies practiced in isolation rarely transfer to actual art-making. Artists complete bootcamps, fill sketchbooks with anatomy studies and perspective grids, and then discover they still cannot make the art they want. The knowledge sits unused because they never practiced applying it within a real creative process. Making art is itself the exercise. Art is a physical, body-based skill like martial arts or dance. The act of creating develops not just technical ability but artistic authorship, the capacity to take an idea and manifest it through a creative process. The key is managing scope, starting with what current skills allow and building the creative muscle of working within limitations rather than waiting for a complete skill set that never arrives.
