This is the lyrical version of the instrumental song, also called "Riding to the Windmills", and which can be found on the Original Instrumental Songs playlist. Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, a foundational work of Western literature, has been called the first modern novel. It is a blend of satire, comedy, and deep philosophical themes, was published in two parts (1605, 1615), and follows Alonso Quijano, a nobleman who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and becomes the knight-errant Don Quixote, setting out with his squire Sancho Panza to revive chivalry, famously battling windmills he mistakes for giants. The novel is a satirical yet profound exploration of reality versus illusion, idealism versus pragmatism, and the individual's struggle with the world. The lyrics: Riding to the Windmills Riding like the wind over plains and hills Fighting to defend against the monstrous giant windmills Saddle up and fly astride a noble steed Gallop to the sky to reach a worthy knightly deed Madman of La Mancha, with his squire Sancho Panza And sway-backed Rocinante, a farm horse in disguise, A stallion by surprise A nag to bear an unwise master Knight-errant Don Quixote sets off at break of day Bearing lance and shield, in search of foes and bold display To charm his Dulcinea, his lovely lady fair Who really is a peasant girl who doesn’t even care Imagined chivalry, fantasized reality Seeking brave exploits to prove his knightly worth And sally boldly forth Only to unearth disaster He perceives the inn as castle, the prostitutes nobility The innkeeper as lord, it’s just his baffled fallibility Windmills ferocious giants, but he is fierce and gallant Lance tilted, charging on with courage, totally entranced Turning fresh the page, striding to the stage Reinventing self to paint a portrait new To change his point of view Even though it shows a scene of rueful laughter Slowly, steadily, illusion to reality, The knight’s spirit descends from lofty clouds to bitter ends While his earthy squire dreams of islands in the sky Then ascends to brave ideals, and sets his moral compass high Madness, sanity, obsession, dignity Intent, frivolity, outdated chivalry To wander far and persevere Perceive the now and then, the here and after
