"In India, it appears that, with religious conversion, national identity is also converted!" Former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee delivered a notable speech on Veer Savarkar in Pune in 1988, during an event honoring the writer Pu La Deshpande. In this address, Vajpayee emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage, noting that even though countries like Indonesia and Afghanistan had embraced Islam, they honoured elements of their pre-Islamic culture, such as the Ramayan in Indonesia and King Kanishka in Afghanistan. As such, he questioned why religious conversion should necessitate the abandonment of one's cultural and historical roots—something he perceived to be happening in India at the time of his speech. King Kanishka I, also known as Kanishka the Great, was a prominent emperor of the Kushan dynasty who reigned approximately from 127 to 150 CE. His empire encompassed a vast region, including much of present-day Afghanistan, northern India, and parts of Central Asia. Under his leadership, the Kushan Empire reached its zenith, becoming a significant political and cultural force in the region. His reign is particularly noted for its strong association with Afghanistan. The core of his empire was centered in Bactria, a historical region that covers parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. He established his main capital at Purushapura (modern-day Peshawar) and maintained another major capital at Kapisa, near present-day Kabul. King Kanishka's reign significantly influenced the historical and cultural landscape of Afghanistan. His military conquests, administrative reforms, and religious patronage left a lasting legacy that shaped the region's development for centuries. #AtalBihariVajpayee #ABV #India #Afghanistan #Speech #Archive #Pune #VeerSarvarkar #PuLaDeshpande #Kanishka #Culture #Tradition #Reel #Viral #Diplomacy #Geopolitics
