At the time, Kia was pitching this all-new model as their flagship competing within the Mid-Size Family Sedan segment. Fast forward 20 years, and the current generation Kia Optima is now in its 4th generation... But, in order to remain competitive in the rapidly advancing mid-size sedan segment, Kia knew they had to give their next-generation #2021Optima a thorough refresh. After all, Kia has tough competition including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Mazda Mazda6, Subaru Legacy, Volkswagen Passat, Chevy Malibu, and even its "sister-car": the Hyundai Sonata. For 2021, Kia will no longer use the "Optima" nameplate, but instead, replace it with a new "K5" nameplate. Yep! The all-new K5! Goodbye, Optima! But, is Kia's new next-gen 2021 Optima (now named the K5) truly ready to reel in more sales for the Kia brand as a whole? In North America, the sedan segment is notably less popular than the SUV/Crossover segment... But, thankfully, Kia is still chanting "LONG LIVE THE FAMILY SEDAN"! After all, Kia's sister company (Hyundai) just introduced an all-new next-gen 2020 Sonata. So, it comes as no surprise that Kia is also coming out with their own all-new next-gen midsize family sedan for 2021. This time around, Kia is implementing Stinger-inspired styling cues... Resulting in the K5 boasting a bold, athletic, yet elegant overall design language (both on the interior and the exterior). Moreover, Kia is stating that the 2021 K5 will be their first-ever FWD-based sedan to feature AWD! Yes! All-Wheel Drive is now available on 2021 models! As far as pricing goes, the Kia K5 (Optima) will still slot in more expensive than Kia's more compact "Forte" and "Rio". Yet, less expensive than Kia's larger "Stinger", "Cadenza", and "K900". Just like its bigger brother (the Stinger), the #2021KiaK5 will feature a fully-turbocharged engine lineup. FWD and AWD will both be available. But, only an 8-speed auto transmission & DCT will be available (no manual transmission as of now).
