Stephen Fagin, Head of Curatorial at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, recently presented a virtual workshop for educators, “Transition of Power: November 22, 1963.” Lyndon Baines Johnson assumed the mantle of the presidency the moment John F. Kennedy died at Parkland Memorial Hospital on November 22, 1963. Rather than return to Washington, D.C. without any visible transition of power, Johnson recognized the need to officially take the oath of office in Dallas with Mrs. Kennedy at his side. This symbolic act – captured in photographs and eyewitness journalist accounts quickly distributed across the country – helped to calm a nation’s fears in the chaotic aftermath of the assassination, leading to the new president’s brief but powerful statement to the world upon landing at Andrews Air Force Base that evening. In the earliest days of his presidency, Johnson understood his role as the vessel for the unfilled hope and promise that President Kennedy left behind, culminating five days later with his push for significant civil rights legislation in memory of the late president. This program was recorded at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on August 7, 2025.
