Led by drummer Alexis Malefakis, the Swiss orchestra delivers a refined and unique interpretation of a genre broadly rooted in Afrobeat – the style pioneered by Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Tony Oladipo Allen half a century ago. Beloved by both Swiss audiences and critics, as well as by global music aficionados, Malefakis’ band wisely avoids any attempt to mimic the brilliance of Afrobeat’s original African musicians. Instead, the group opens itself to a broader range of influences from across the African continent, resulting in irresistibly danceable and highly contagious music. Konkolo's syncopated and funky sound, arranged by Malefakis, gives listeners little choice: when they play, the party starts, no matter the weather. Whether it’s polar cold or sweltering heat, if you’re in front of this orchestra, and your ears are working, you won’t be able to stop yourself from dancing. The band’s instrumental mastery is unquestionable, offsetting the inevitable contrast between the physical expressions of some musicians and the powerful groove of Afrobeat. Thankfully, the inclusion of two African musicians, especially the spectacular vocalist Nongoma Ndlovu, brings authenticity and natural movement, in harmony with the sound and spirit of the music. Throughout the performance, despite the incredible energy of the horn section, it's the rhythm section that truly stands out. Percussionists Kudus Yabdoo, Elias Knecht, and Willi Hauenstein ignite the stage, making their drums sing as they strike the skins, creating the musical equivalent of a firework display. And for a European orchestra, that in itself deserves major praise.
