Born September 27, 1927...... Today Ruth Davis would be celebrating her 90th Birthday! Born September 27, 1927 to Mr. Henry Davis and Rev. Louvenia Wright Davis. Ruth was the 2nd Born of 6 children. Raised in a christian household, This North Philadelphia Family moved from Warnock street over to 2227 N. 6th Street, which would be a popular known address for this musical family. She attended Mt. Zion Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas under Pastorship of Rev. H. L. Walker (FBH Church founded by. Bishop W. E. Fuller Sr. -1908) Ruth along with her sisters would travel with their mother who was an Evangelist to church revivals and sing together in front of crowds. Their 1st Piano Trainer and Music Teacher was Deacon James Newton. Ruth would later enlist in the army but didn't stay long, and would be ready to embark on a recording career. The Group first members were Ruth, Thelma, Audrey and Alfreda Davis along with Pianist Curtis Dublin. Ruth Davis met Curtis and asked him to join the group. With Curtis Dublin background in jazz mixed with gospel, The Davis Sisters introduced a new sound to Gospel Music. The Davis Sister where the first female groups to sing Hard Gospel. Ruth had a powerful voice that would carry far, often asking that a microphone wouldn't be placed too close to her. Her favorite song was "Shine One Me". she would often take a hankerchief across her chest and belt out them squall and high notes, leave the congregation fainted, falling out in the holy ghost. Many Male singers, female singers, Quartet group would hate to perform after her on programs because their be nothing left to do. Ruth had many friends in the industry and inspired many others, such as Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Ray Charles and many others. Ruth special friend was Della Beatrice (Ray Charles wife) whom home she visit anytime she traveled to visit them in California. For a little while Ruth broke away from her sisters to move to New York and recorded with Issac Douglas and The Ruth Davis Singers. She moved back to Philadelphia and resumed recording with her sisters until her death. Recording over 12 Albums and Singles with Savoy, Apex, Gotham, RCA Victor, HOBs and Hi-Way Records. Ruth made tv apperances with her sisters on top Gospel Tv programs such as TV Gospel Time and Jubilee Showcase. In 1968 The Davis Sisters were nominated for a grammy for their Song " Wait A Little Longer". Ruth was not only a singer but a songwriter, even writing songs with her sister Thelma for the group. 1969 Ruth was getting sick, but she still fought on. On January 2, 1970 on the same her sister Thelma Died (14 years difference.) Ruth Davis passed away. Her Homegoing service was attending by many greats. The 2 day Memorial Service was a combination of 36 hours. Rev. C. L. Franklin preached during one of the service, which was held at Cornerstone Baptist Church, where Rev. Harold O. Davis was the Pastor
