The pillowcase in bed linen gets dirty the fastest. Hair, creams, street dust – all of this settles on the fabric, and the pillow needs to be washed frequently. But there’s a clever way to protect it and reduce the number of washes: sew a special cover. Regular pillowcases fit loosely, while this cover will snugly fit the pillow and not slip off, as its secret is an elastic band. I sewed such a pillowcase for a 40×40 cm pillow. Instead of a traditional fastener or flap, my model is secured to the pillow with an elastic band, completely covering one side, while the other side is gathered with a border. It’s like a fitted sheet. This option holds well and protects the pillow from dirt. How to sew an elastic pillowcase? First, I calculated the fabric dimensions. To ensure the cover fits well and isn’t too tight, I added 10 cm to each edge. As a result, the piece turned out to be 60×60 cm. Then I cut out 10×10 cm squares from each corner – this is necessary to form the corners that will give the cover its shape. I added 1 cm seam allowances so that I wouldn’t have to struggle with the fit later. Next comes the assembly. I sewed all the cut corners together to create a box shape. Then I finished the edges to prevent fraying and stitched a casing around the perimeter – a small tunnel for the elastic band. I left an opening, threaded the elastic inside, and gathered it to the desired length. As a result, on one side, the pillowcase completely covers the pillow, while on the other side, it gathers into soft folds. Now, if I need to quickly freshen up the pillow, it’s enough to remove this cover and wash it – and the pillow itself will stay clean much longer. This method is also great because the pillowcase is easy to take off and put on, yet it doesn’t slip off, even if you toss and turn in your sleep. Plus, you can experiment with fabrics and colors; for instance, you could make such a cover from jersey or terry cloth for even more comfort. Now my pillow is well protected, and I don’t have to wash the main pillowcase as often. If you’re tired of washing pillows too, try sewing such a cover – it’s easier than it seems, and the benefits are huge! Wishing you all the best!
