Your complimentary masterclass from NCI University: https://nci.university/masterclass-si... D1 — Harmless Rule Questioning What it is: The lightest possible deviation from normal conversation. You say something slightly more honest than people usually say — a reality everyone knows but nobody says out loud. What it does: Establishes tone. Signals: this conversation isn’t going to follow the normal script. It tells the nervous system: the environment just got a little more real. Purpose: A door opener. Creates a space where the mask doesn’t need to be on so tight. D2 — Shared Social Criticism What it is: You go a step deeper by not just acknowledging reality, but critiquing it. An observation about society/people “with a slight edge,” positioning you and the listener on the same side of the observation. What it does: Invites the other person to agree with a slightly deviant perspective — to step outside the norm with you. Result: If they match it (“yeah, exactly”), the bond begins: you’re two people who see the same thing most people don’t. That’s connection the mask can’t produce. D3 — Private Truth Admission What it is: The first rung where it gets personal. Not deeply personal — but personal enough that most people wouldn’t say it in normal conversation. You shift from criticizing the world to acknowledging something about yourself (or the human condition) with realness. What it does: Sets a new floor for the conversation: depth is welcome, the mask can come down a notch. Mechanism: Their brain runs the calculation: “Do I match that, or do I stay behind the mask?” If D1/D2 set the tone, they usually match — not because you asked, but because the social contract wants equilibrium.Warning: This is where it gets dangerous if you haven’t done your own work. D4 — Taboo Mention What it is: You name something that exists in the shadows — something everyone knows is there, but no one talks about. Not shock for shock’s sake. True, script-violating reality. What it does: The listener’s nervous system often relaxes — not because it’s comfortable, but because it’s true.Core idea: Politeness says, “I’ll show you what’s safe.” Truth says, “I’ll show you what’s real.” And real is where trust lives. D5 — Intimate Internal Reveal What it is: The top rung. The mask is almost all the way off. You reveal something so personal and internal that it creates a bond that can’t be manufactured — an internal reckoning, a turning point, a core truth. What it does: Creates an asymmetry the brain can’t ignore. Their mask becomes uncomfortable in the presence of that much honesty — and they feel pulled to match it. Result: When both people meet at this level, you’re no longer “having a conversation.” You’re in a space most humans rarely access — and that’s where real influence lives. That’s where an Author operates.
