Peat is a high-carbon, combustive material formed from decaying plant matter, commonly used by farmers for heating. While burning peat is iconic to Irish culture, it poses severe environmental and health risks due to its high CO2 emissions. Ireland has significantly reduced its reliance on peat for electricity and heating, shifting toward cleaner energy alternatives and focusing on the restoration of boglands.
