Fans set to return to Peru's football stadiums

(3 Sep 2021) Peru's national team plays against Uruguay on Thursday for the South American World Cup Qualifiers 2022  in the first match with public after more than a year of prohibition due to the pandemic. Fans returned to the stadium excited and hopeful that it was not the only game they will be able to attend. "Hopefully, we will be back (for local football matches) in the stadiums in a short time," said Augusto Vaca wearing a Peru's national team t-shirt at the entrance of the stadium. The match at Lima's  National Stadium will be played for the first time with 20 percent capacity and all attendees must be vaccinated against the COVID-19 coronavirus, according to the Peruvian government. Only those over 18 years of age will be allowed under strict health controls. The Peruvian national team is desperately seeking a place at the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Peru is in the last position (10) of the South American teams table. The  COVID-19 pandemic in Peru has slowed down, but a third wave of infections is expected to hit at the end of September. As of Thursday, according to John Hopkins University tracking, Peru has reported 2,150,006 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1198,295 deaths.
