Here I discuss a conference presentation by Michele Martel and colleagues about a study they conducted on the effects of fluctuations in female hormones across the menstrual cycle and its adverse impact on ADHD symptoms. The paper was presented last October at a conference but should be published later this year in a scientific journal. The research was summarized in Scientific American (see below) and is very consistent with the hypotheses made in an earlier review paper (see below) that I discussed on this channel in December (2023). The study found that such hormonal fluctuations did have an adverse effect of ADHD symptoms the week prior to and also the week of menstruation, as well as around the time of occupation. The effects may well extend beyond ADHD symptoms to include executive functioning and other cognitive functions. The earlier review also asserted that fluctuations in hormones across a female’s reproductive life, such as a peri-menopause, could also adversely affect ADHD symptoms, executive functioning, including emotion regulation, and even comorbid mood symptoms.
