Groovy 60s cabaret swing with smoky sax and twinkling keys exchanging playful midnight notes. On this day in jazz history… On March 14, 1932, Mark Murphy was born in Syracuse, New York, into a musical family that gave him an early feel for harmony, rhythm, and the space between notes. He came up in the 1950s with a smooth, Nat King Cole-influenced style, then absorbed bebop phrasing and vocalese into his sound and never looked back. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he recorded for Decca, Capitol, Riverside, and Muse, consistently reimagining standards and Brazilian tunes with daring rhythmic and harmonic choices that set him apart from everyone else in the room. Commercial success mostly eluded him. He spent years building audiences in Europe while American radio moved on without him. None of it stopped him. Younger listeners found him anyway, musicians revered him, and he kept performing into his eighties, a singer who never once played it safe.
