Walk with me 21 - Hampton Lane off London Road in Chalford (St Mary's) to the top of Cowcombe Hill

It was a lovely sunny afternoon on 6 November 2020 that I set off from Hampton Lane which is on the south side of London Road (A419) as you travel from Chalford to Stroud. The lane crosses the Thames and Severn Canal and then you walk up to a crossing over the main Stroud - Swindon railway tracks. On the other side is a track that leads up to the road between Chalford and Hyde (Hyde Hill) - you'll hear a train hooting as it passes on the tracks that I'd just crossed. I crossed over the road, up and over the stile and then through a field to get into Hyde Woods. I took the wrong direction almost immediately, corrected myself, and then went wrong again! No signs to tell me the way. I find the correct track through the woods and after a very short distance, start climbing up to the right. Interesting stone steps to climb up a wall and then I had to duck right under some low lying branches before emerging onto a track coming from the Hyde Hill direction that leads to a few houses (apologies for the rucksack strap that waves into view several times during this part of the walk). Walk along here and then back into the woods for some part-leafy rustle and some part-squelch walking. A little way along, I came to a clearing in the woods and from here the path ascended gently on the right up to some wide open fields (maybe part of Hyde Farm). Lovely views all around and the sky was amazing. The wind noise was considerable too. I walked along the edges of two large fields and came across an interesting stone circle with seating (can't find any mention of it online?). I continued along the edge of this field and emerged on a little side road running almost parallel with the A419 up near the roundabout at the glider club. A short distance farther along, and I was at the edge of the A419 opposite the junction for Westley Farm holiday accommodation. Walk 22 will take you on from here.
